Physician practices

OK, this came up in another thread, so here we go.

Let's talk about physicians, how they recommend and prescribe, and some of your experiences with physicians running scared from the DEA.

Remember: There are no prescriptions for medical marijuana.

But it's still a great topic and a great question, and I'm interested to hear people's comments.

NORML, I'm aware there are no prescriptions for therapeutic cannabis, but what I'm interested in are comments re: physicians who prescribe opiates and perhaps also recommend.

We're about to get into the Pain Initiative subject here, so I was hoping to elicit comments on both prescribing and recommending practices.

The problem I have is that my doctor at the VA could not sign a recommendation as a physician in the federal system even though he personally thought medical marijuana was a good thing that would help my chronic neuro-muscular condition.

He did document in his notes that I had chronic pain/muscle weakness which another retired doctor was able to use to sign a recommendation.

This 2nd doctor said he would not have been able to sign the recommendation unless he was retired.

So, it is hard to get a recommendation from a doctor even if they are favorably predisposed to medical marijuana in principle.

Thank goodness there are doctors that step up to write these recommendations.

This is why THCF Medical clinics have opened in Missoula and Billings. THCF will be seeing patients in Missoula again on Dec. 16 and in Billings on Dec. 17. Patients with qualifying conditions should call 1-800-723-0188 to schedule an appointment.

I've worked with some doctors who have no problem, while other fear the stigma attached to recommending this medicine. We just have to remember that people fear what they don't understand. One thing you could mention to your doctor: The American Nurses Association (one of the biggest in the nation) made it public that they back the use of medicinal mj, and that they advocate the education of nurses in this field. There IS progress, just slow.

Cannabanoids.... The way cannabis works on pain is there is specific nerves that deal with pain. They are called vanilloid-Receptors. Anandamide(sanscript word for "Blissful Amide"), the bodies internally produced marijuana binds with the nerve endings, reducing pain. Anandamides are produced internally by our bodies in response to a whole variety of conditions. As an example, Aspirin prevents the breakdown of Anandamide, the internally produced marijuana to activate & start working at easing pain. How many old lady's say they "WOULD NEVER" use marijuana & are actually using the equivalent of marijuana that their bodies produce as a natural activity, & don't even realize it. And how many politicians and citizens of the US do this also & aren't even aware they are condemning something that their bodies make naturally. Anecdotal evidence is valid because when a person smokes marijuana & it relieves their pain, then they smoke it again & it relieves their pain again it becomes a fact known only to that person, but nonetheless true. Little factoid......Rich

NORML- I thought there were 9 federal medical marijuana patients who have prescriptions? Do the feds still provide cannabis for some patients?

It became crystal clear when the wife's doctor refused to sign that many of these physicians are simply becoming rich as salespeople for the real drug cartels, the pharmaceutical behemoths!
Why would a doctor rather my wife take X,Y, and Z, (which make her stupid) than smoke/eat a bud?

*x,y,z all pain meds

The pharmaceutical behemouths are our worst enemy Daddio. All of these companies are committed to make more profit for their shareholders. Their secondary goal is patient care. Medical Marijuana will hurt their bottom line because it is a great medicine. My wife is a nurse and deals with these shifty dope pushers from the pharmaceutical companies every day. If you put a suit on a snake he is still a snake....

My experiences with mmj in the medical community has been varied. Maybe it's because these doctors can speak about this matter more freely with me (a nurse). Most of the doctors I've spoken with aren't against mmj, it's just that their hands are tied. They can't speak about it, unless a patient brings the subject to them. They can't even help a patient access the medicine. There's frustration among the medical community, because they DO recognize the value of mmj. It's up to us, the patients, to start the conversation. I've asked physicians what they'd rather see -a pain contract that keeps a patient on high dose narcotics, or mmj. MOST say they would rather see mmj. Even though our physicians aren't publicy standing behind it, please keep in mind that they are beyond frustrated with narcotics, and most wouldn't like to deal with it at all.

Just like everything else in life -there are doctors who don't believe in mmj. There's doctors that don't prescribe narcotics, too. We have a CHOICE. If your physician doesn't meet your needs, or doesn't support YOUR participation in your health - it's time to find another. A good doctor would welcome you taking an active role in your health management. If he/she doesn't, then perhaps they've become jaded by the "god complex" that some physicians fall prey to.

By the way, every single doctor I've worked with HATES pharmaceutical reps. Just a thought -

Be well, be educated, and take the lead in your healthcare!
